laurieton
Laurieton is situated at the mouth of the Camden Haven River on the pristine holiday coast of New South Wales, 4 hours drive north of Sydney. Surrounded by state forests, nature reserves and national parks, and nestled between Queens Lake and Watson Taylor Lake, Laurieton is the ideal base for visiting the Camden Haven area.
Accommodation in and around Laurieton is available to cater for individual needs and budgets, ranging from caravans and small cabins to modern hotel accommodation by the river.
north brother
Overlooking the town of Laurieton and the Pacific Ocean, North Brother Mountain must surely be one of the most spectacular paragliding sites in Australia.
Launch is at 490 metres amsl and takes northeast through east winds. Flyable all year round, but best for cross country November through April. Not recommended for novice pilots however as the landing zone is not within view of the takeoff, and there are no bombout options immediately below launch. The river creates a severe venturi effect at the landing zone when the sea breeze kicks in. Be mindful of your approach, bad penetration can be experienced. In good conditions, it is possible to fly over the back to Middle Brother and beyond.
Note: strictly no landing in the football grounds - the designated landing paddock is on private property and access is restricted (contact High Adventure in Laurieton).
middle brother
Situated about 10 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean, Middle Brother Mountain has two launches taking southeast and southwest winds respectively. The southeast launch is not suitable for novice pilots however as the takeoff area is quite restrictive with a barbed wire fence very close by.
Both launch sites are around 550 metres amsl and are flyable all year round, but best for cross country August through April. There are plenty of bombout options at the base of the mountain within easy reach of both launches (one property owner however is aggressive toward pilots). Be mindful on approach to the designated landing zone that surrounding trees can create a wind shadow. In good conditions, it is possible to fly over the back to follow the Pacific Highway towards Kew and beyond.
bonny hills
Bonny Hills is a coastal soaring site on the Pacific coast, a few kilometres north of Laurieton, with two launches taking southeast and northeast winds respectively. Suitable for novice through advance pilots, both launch sites are around 40 metres amsl and are flyable September through March.
The southeast launch is a treeless site accessed via a 100 metre or so walk, suitable for top-landing with a bombout also available beneath takeoff. The northeast launch has some surrounding trees, and is also suitable for top-landing, though don’t go too far back - be mindful of rotor and the powerlines! There is also a thin sandy beach bombout beneath takeoff but is restrictive.
diamond head
Diamond Head is a coastal headland located in Crowdy Bay National Park, a few kilometres south of Laurieton. There are multiple sites suitable for launching a paraglider along the headland ranging from 45 metres to 180 metres amsl, making it possible to fly in northeast through to south winds. The northeast site is reached via a long walk.
Suitable for novice through advanced pilots, there is plenty of room for top-landings along the headland. Bottom landings can be restrictive depending on location along the headland. There are absolutely no bombout options at the front cliffs however. Be mindful of wind direction when flying onto other faces.
