The First State, New South Wales (covering 800,628 square kilometres) was so named by Captain James Cook, who thought that it looked somewhat like south Wales in Britain. Its capital and Australia's largest city, Sydney, is a harbour city about 6 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean.

The southern highlands range from undulating to rugged at 650 to 860 metres amsl. The eastern side of the region is bounded by the cliffs and ravines of the Illawarra escarpment and Morton National Park.
Kosciusko National Park in the Snowy Mountains is the largest national park in the state and includes the highest plateau in the Australian continent. Mt Kosciusko (2228 amsl) is its highest peak.
Australia’s oldest commercial wine producing area, the Hunter Valley, first started making wine in the 1830’s and is still going strong today with some 70 established wineries in the lower Hunter region.
